The Snowpine Lodge in Alta, Utah has a storied past that dates back further than any other structure in Little Cottonwood Canyon. The building was erected in Alta when mining was the primary industry in the Albion Basin and was altered to fit the changing needs of the town during Alta’s transformation from a silver-mining community to a world-class skiing destination. It was first a general store turned post-office, then a makeshift army barracks and public shelter, and was eventually established as a home for skiers in 1938, when it was christened the Snowpine Lodge.
